Tech Intensives

Tech Intensives are two hour intensives on topics requiring more depth and interactive delivery. 10 different topics will be offered; four will be hands-on using computers. Topics for 2009 include: web tools, web design and more.

New!—Integrating Adobe Creative Suite to Maximize E-Learning Development
Professional web designers and graphic professionals around the world use the Adobe Creative Suite for Web to create exciting and dynamic web sites, graphic pieces and multimedia. If you are an eLearning developer, you should consider using this powerful package to create and deliver your online courses. But, what software do you get in the suite? What role does each piece play? How well do they work together? This session will answer those questions, plus provide you with tips and techniques for maximizing your development capabilities.

New!--Instructional Design for the Semantic Web
This session will teach participants how to evaluate and design a semantic taxonomy for learning content based on learning and performance objectives. Participants will learn how to build XML content schemas that properly define and structure content for delivery through various media and that are pulled based on different learner criteria. This session presents a new vision of the instructional designer in a networked, semantic web aimed at evolving the practice of instructional design. As an example of how instructional design can work with semantic technologies, this session will introduce participants to the DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture) for learning content model recently included in the next release of DITA 1.2.

Expanded and updated from 2008—Measuring Learning Results: Research Insights for Better Evaluation Designs
Smile sheets give us inadequate information. Level 2 assessments are often poorly designed AND poorly deployed. So how can we get valid feedback on our learning programs? Using insights gleaned from the research on learning, the speaker will explore this vexing issue from multiple perspectives. The session will cover the context, timing, and inadvertent biasing of assessments; improving smile-sheet design, the development of authentic questions; the benefits of questioning; and the criticality of improved feedback mechanisms to drive instructional-design improvements. A discussion of how to evaluate Learning 2.0 initiatives will be included. You will be asked to brainstorm and plan evaluation efforts to reinforce the session information. The session content is based on the speaker’s recent research report and recent research surveying e-learning professionals.

Expanded from 2008--Facilitation Skills for E-Trainers
Classroom trainers can transition to facilitating online learning. Take an inventory to identify your preferred style of facilitating online learning. Improve learner retention by using ten online facilitation skills. Increase learner participation to encourage learning during online classes.
